On Thursday, the results of the student SMR project competition—organized with the support of Rolls‑Royce SMR Company and the British Embassy in Budapest—were announced. The competition, jointly organized by the Institute of Nuclear Techniques of BME and the HUN‑REN Centre for Energy Research, was won by the Core Team.
SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) are small‑capacity nuclear power plants designed for serial production and factory assembly. During the competition, the teams were tasked with simulating the initial activities of a project company implementing an SMR investment—from establishing the corporate structure to selecting the site. They had to familiarize themselves with both the UK and Hungarian nuclear regulatory frameworks and assess the compliance of the Rolls‑Royce SMR with domestic requirements. The four participating teams prepared a 30–50 page written submission, which they then presented orally to the professional jury.
The members of the winning Core Team—Isabel Rita Berg, Barnabás Mohácsi, Csongor Szegedi‑Csinády, Zsófia Várkonyi, and Antal Zsiros—will participate in a study trip to the United Kingdom this spring, where they will visit the Rolls‑Royce SMR Company’s development centre at the University of Sheffield.
Congratulations!
